well personally, I think that the government is right in trying to stop ppl from speaking singlish. I don't think it should ever be accepted a a language by itself, for it is a modification of english that defies even the simplest and most basic grammar rules.
Unlike australian and american slang that do not defy grammar rules but introduce new words, they have also yet to be accepted as a language, but only as a modification of english in this specific region of the world. so, why shouldn't singlish be any different?

Well, I think Singlish just symbolizes the rich culture in Singapore. It is just a "modification of English" as commented by Anonymous. Singlish only allows people in Singapore (and possibly Malaysia because Singlish and Manglish are quite similiar) to communicate with each other. It cannot be understood by others around other parts of the world as it is not recognized as a language. It is not recognized as a language because it follows some rules. Even the article in Wikipedia analysed Snglish: Singlish
** It follows some rules dictated by other languages and hence cannot be recognized as an individual language.
*** A language is a type of communication following its own rules and regulations (ie, Grammar and Vocabulary, etc.).
Hence Singlish should not be recognized as an individual language.
